The Structure of Complex Plants Part 3

Roots have many important uses.

1. The first use of of a plants roots is to hold plants in the soil. Without roots, the wind and the rain and stuff would blow the plants over,

2. To provide water and minerals for the plant, water is essential for a plants life. Without water, the plant will die.

3. Roots also sometimes function as storage space for food. When plants are not able to generate their own food, They live of the food stored in their roots.

Stems.

Stems come in many shapes and sizes, depending on the plant. And, like the leaves, they have a few different functions.

The first function of the stem is to hold the leaves up off the ground.

Use number 2. Some plants, such as the rose, have special things on their stems, so they use their stem for protection

Use number 3. Some plants, such as the potato, use their stems for storing food.

Use number 4. The function of some stems is to assist the plant with reproduction. The plant sends out special stems called “Runners”. That take root and grow as new plants.

Use number 5. Also, a special function of some stems is to anchor the plant so it can grow upwards. An example of this is shown in the grape vine or runner bean.

One of the biggest differences between simple and complex plants is that complex plants have stems and simple plants do not. That is why some complex plants, such as the giant redwood, can grow really big.

Structure

Although complex plants look very different from each other, Most of them have the same characteristics. Leaves, stems, roots and flowers set them apart from the plants known as simple plants.

Leaves;

Leaves have many different functions. The first function of them is to collect light for making their food by the process of photosynthesis. The second function is for protection, not all plants use them for protection but some, such as the cactus, do. The third function is to shade the leaves roots to preserve moisture

Science: Conducting systems

27 10 2008

Simple plants have no coducting systems. A conducting system is a system Complex plants have for Conducting food and water around the plants body. Because the conducting system provides nourishment for the plant the plant can grow enormous. An example of the gigantic-ness is demonstrated in the Giant Redwood.
