19 09 2007

Solarium’s are Thingy’s that you get onto and it tans you, artificially, but it is up to five times more likely to give you skin cancer than just the normal sun. Skin cancer is mainly caused by UV(Ultra Violet) rays from the sun, they travel all the way from the sun to your skin, and you don’t even feel it. To much exposure to UV rays damages skin cells and causes them to grow into a cancerous lump of…. of…. blearghhh. The most common form of skin cancer, Melanoma, is actually the most common among the 15 to 30 age group.

Lego Man

4 09 2007

Theres this man called Nathan Sawaya, who has a really cool job, he’s a certified Lego master builder, it means he plays… er, builds Lego all day and earns money for it! And believe it or not, he was a lawyer before he started his Lego job!! He even has his own exhibition to show off his Lego sculptures to his fans, and give some tips to other Lego builders. He said that the worst day of being a Lego artist is still better than the best day of being a lawyer.

Hey dad….. I have another job I want to do when I’m older.

Fine Art

21 08 2007

There’s a man called Willard Wigan who make tiny tiny tiny sculptures small enough to fit in the eye of a needle, or be inhaled. He uses tiny home made tools and a microscope to make the teeny little things.  And , believe it or not, he uses a flies HAIR to paint them :) fineart1.jpgThe photo is of him and some of his sculptures. And once he sold an Elephant carved out of a  piece of sand!

Bustards

14 08 2007

Bustards are a large bird that lives in Australia and is becoming extinct. One reason why they are becoming extinct, is that a lot of there natural habitat is getting cut down or poisoned by pesticides or eaten by foxes or cats. But a breeding program is being set up to make more of these cute little…. or should I say big fellas. When they are only a few months old they can weigh about to two or three kilograms and the grown-up males can grow up to be a meter or more tall and weigh more ten kilograms.

Corporal Punishment

10 07 2007

In school, They used to cane children when they played up or even got their work wrong. Some people are saying we should introduce the whack again because some kids are getting very naughty. A lot of people say that corporal punishment is wrong and should not be introduced again, because it teaches kids to think “The teacher hit him with a stick so so can I.”

Fossil Fuels

29 05 2007

Electricity is generated by burning fossil fuels, its pretty smart but it makes a lot of carbon dioxide. Some people say that all the carbon dioxide is making the world hotter. The Government is spending lots of money on doing stuff to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases that are going into the atmosphere. One way, is when the co2 (carbon dioxide) comes out, it is pumped under the ground so it is trapped so it cannot get out.

Bee Threat

15 05 2007

In some parts of the world, lots, as in, hundreds of millions, of bees are dying. And if they keep dying, a lot of fruit and vegies and plants will die. There are a fair few different theories as to why the bees are dying. Some think it is because of mobile phones, the radiation from the mobile phones are interfering with the bee’s natural ability to get home. And some also think the pesticides and stuff that their spraying all over the plants, is making the bees sick, in some places in America they once sprayed the chemicals right near them to wipe out a nasty bug that had been attacking them.

Video Games

8 05 2007

Video games are a lot of fun but for some people it isn’t just fun, its serious business, They’re training to be video game artists. Its a huge industry, and now makes over 100 million dollars a year. But to make big money the companies don’t themselves have to be big. An Aussie company called Ratbag turned out to be a massive success, but it started as only two mates. The reason it was such a big success was it was bought by a big company. Some movie makers are annoyed because a fair few people spend more on video games than on going to the movies.
